Bruxism is clenching or grinding your teeth, often without being aware that you are doing it. This may occur during the day or night.
Some people only grind their teeth while they sleep; this condition is called “nocturnal bruxism” or “sleep-related bruxism.” Others grind their teeth during the daytime as well, most often during situations that make them feel tense or anxious. Bruxism can lead to fractured dental fillings or other tooth damage (broken crowns), temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), mysterious morning headaches and unexplained facial pain.
In many bruxism cases a night guard is highly recommended. A night guard is a plastic device worn to prevent the teeth from grinding together and causing further wear or damage to the teeth.
For those patients that clench and grind during the day, Vivera retainers are a great option as the retainer itself is clear in color, allowing for discreetness. Most patients prefer using Vivera retainers as a Night guard to protect their teeth against clenching and grinding while they sleep, as they are thinner and therefore more comfortable to wear than traditional bulky Night Guards.
